Fire prevention
At the website of Eerste Hulp Ben Jij (the first responder is you) there are tips to help you prevent fires from occurring.
What causes fire?
Fire needs three things to be ignited; it needs something flammable, oxygen and heat. A fire often starts small and controlled but spreads easily and rapidly. For example, think about a fire in the kitchen or in a pellet stove.
What to do during a fire
- Flee outside and close all doors.
- Stay away from the smoke and try not to inhale it, as it is poisonous.
- Call 112.
Why is the smoke dangerous?
Smoke contains poisonous gasses, chemicals and particles that can be harmful when inhaled. The intoxication through inhalation may lead to breathing difficulties, irritation of airway systems, or poisoning.
There is a fire inside, and I cannot leave the house. What do I do?
- Stay away from the fire and find a place with the least amount of smoke present.
- Close all inside doors.
- Cover all your glands. You could for example use fabrics, clothing, or towels.
- Call 112 and tell them where you are located.
- Wave from a window to make others aware of your location.
- Stay down (close to the floor) as smoke rises.
